In 1978 I self-published my first book and have been at it ever since. Putting out a book is an incredible experience.
My first step is to go out and learn to do something, to experience it. In the case of my first book, I sunk my teeth into calling fox. I called fox in 6 states and Ontario, day and night, every month of the year. Some was with a gun, some with a camera - experimenting, learning and always enjoying. That in itself is a great journey. But there was no book specifically on fox calling to study. I decided to write that book for others.
I took the photos and wrote the manuscript. I immersed myself even further into calling fox and relived the experience to an even greater extent as I wrote. Finally, the writing was done. I just automatically went into self-publishing mode. One day the finished copies were ready at the printer. Wow! What a high! I then advertised in half a dozen outdoor magazines. I sold 3,000 copies that first winter. I was hooked! I've been into books ever since.
In addition to self-publishing, I have been assisting authors from all walks of life for more than 20 years in transforming their manuscript into a finished book. Some of these were also self-publishing and wanted my help with a portion of the book making process. For others, I acted as a traditional publisher and paid a royalty to the author for their efforts.
